Hayley, Cannock, age 30
Hayley has smoked since she was 12 years old and has never attempted to quit before. The only time she didn’t smoke was for a period of a few weeks when she was chronically ill and was unable to smoke; however, she soon returned to smoking when she was well again. Hayley, whose partner also smokes, has two young children and is currently 3 months pregnant with her third.
Hayley has had two miscarriages in the past 5 months and after her midwife advised that her smoking could be playing a part in this, she knew that she had to quit for the health of the baby. Hayley also felt that it was important for her and her partner’s emotional health and wellbeing as they wanted to do everything that they could to reduce the risk of further miscarriages.
Despite Hayley’s strong motivation to quit, she was really doubtful when she started her quit attempt as she “goes off her head” when stressed and said that the only thing she feels will calm her down is smoking. Her midwife referred her to Stop4Life, the local Free Stop Smoking in Pregnancy Service, to find out about the free advice and support that is available to pregnant smokers in Staffordshire.
Hayley found her stop smoking advisor, Vicky, both friendly and approachable. She was very positive about Hayley’s decision to quit but also understood that she was feeling nervous about her ability to do so and advised that with support from the service she was 4 times more likely to quit than going it alone. Vicky arranged to see her at her home that afternoon and they chatted for almost an hour.
One of the key parts of her sessions has been finding out why she smoked, what she felt she got from it and coming up with alternative ways to get the same results without smoking. Vicky helped Hayley to identify her triggers, for example the stress of getting the kids to school on time and the school having issues with the children often being late. Hayley would have at least 3 cigarettes whilst trying to get the children ready for school and out of the door. Together, they came up with solutions such as giving the children a challenge to be the first to be dressed and ready by the door at 8:20am every school day and there would be a treat for the winner. Hayley introduced this strategy and was over the moon at how successful it was.
Hayley also found boredom to be a trigger to smoke and through discussions with her advisor she identified the times she was likely to have time on her hands and came up with ideas to fill this time – she is making things for her new baby and is also considering setting up a crocheting group to help other mums-to-be to quit.
Vicky also offered to support Hayley’s partner to stop smoking, as this would give Hayley the best chance to stay on track and Vicky could even see them at the same time.
Hayley has found Stop4Life to be particularly flexible and understanding; she feels that nothing has been too much trouble for them. When she had not been able to attend an appointment there was no issue, it was rearranged for when she was available again and Hayley was very impressed that this was the same day that she had contacted her advisor. Hayley finds home visits useful as she has lots of other appointments now that she is pregnant and they easily fit in around her daily routine with her children.
